Travel cover has a different job

Travel insurance typically addresses a defined journey, including eligible emergencies and sometimes cancellation or baggage risks. It should not be assumed to provide ongoing medical care for permanent residence abroad. Check residence and trip-duration requirements before purchase.

International medical insurance also varies: routine care, outpatient services and treatment outside the cover area depend on the selected product. The label alone does not tell you whether a specific bill is eligible.

Check what happens in an emergency

Keep the assistance contact and policy number accessible. Ask about authorization, evacuation destination and repatriation terms, including who decides whether transfer is medically necessary.

Review exclusions for activities, medical history and destinations. If you need both a resident medical policy and travel protection, compare how the two contracts interact rather than assuming one replaces the other.
