Look at timing before benefits

Maternity benefits may have a waiting period before eligible treatment can be claimed. The duration and which benefits it applies to depend on the insurer, product and issuing entity. Confirm the applicable dates in the actual policy rather than relying on a general product headline.

If pregnancy has already begun, ask the insurer what can and cannot be covered before you apply. Do not assume buying a broader plan makes an existing pregnancy eligible.

Read the whole family pathway

Routine antenatal care, delivery, pregnancy complications and newborn treatment may sit under different limits. Check each separately, including how a hospital obtains authorization and whether an outpatient option is required.

Ask when and how a newborn must be added, whether health information is needed and how congenital conditions are treated. Record the process before delivery so an administrative deadline does not come as a surprise.
